The Technical University Munich (TUM) is one of the most renowned technical universities in Germany with several clusters of excellence, a broad
interdisciplinary research program, and numerous national and international collaborations. At the newly founded Chair for Biomedical X-Ray Physics (E17) in the Department of Physics we are now offering a 3-year GSISH- funded Ph.D. position for an interdisciplinary project on Modelling of X- Ray Pha se- Contrast in the field of Biomedical Imaging/ X-ray Physics/ Biomedical Engineering. Project description: X-ray phase-contrast is a recently developed novel x-ray imaging method, which provides better soft-tissue contrast compared to conventional attenuation-based approaches. Up until now several successful proof-of-principle experiments were carried out with conventional laboratory x-ray sources and with highly brilliant synchrotron radiation sources. These experiments demonstrate impressively the high potential of the method for future clinical application. The next step, and main scientific motivation for this project, is the further development of x-ray phasecontrast imaging in the field of biomedical x-ray diagnostics. The successful candidate will work on the development of adequate system simulation and numerical modelling tools to properly describe the physical processes which give rise to the final phase-contrast image. The main focus will lie on the image quality and breast equivalent dose of phase-contrast imaging for mammography and on the comparison of this entitlement with classical, absorption-based x-ray mammography. The project will involve working with partners from industry (General Electric (GE) located on the Garching Campus). The student will work at the TUM and at GE. Qualifications: The applicant should possess a Master's degree or equivalent in Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or Informatics and intend to obtain a PhD degree (Dr. rer. nat.) within the scheduled time of 3 years. Good writing and communication skills in English are required. A prior knowledge in system-programming skills (for example: Matlab, Python, C++, Labview) would be helpful.
